*Remember the papir rose? Doesn't it work beautifully with this arrangement? 💙
There’s something extra satisfying about giving new life to leftover fabric, especially when it turns into something both beautiful and practical. If you've got a stack of fabric scraps you’ve been meaning to use, this quick and simple DIY is for you! Using a round sewing cutter and a little creative flair, I transformed my leftover grey and dark blue fabric into elegant, wavy-edged table napkins—perfect for dressing up any meal.
What You’ll Need:
Leftover fabric (light to medium weight cotton or linen works best)
Rotary cutter (preferably with a wavy or scalloped blade)- this is optional, you can also use a sharp and medium size scissor.
Cutting mat or a hard surface to cut onto
Ruler or measuring tape
Iron
Sewing machine (optional, depending on your finishing choice) - I used a candle or a lighter to close the edges and the threads coming out
Step 1: Choose and Prep Your Fabric
Dig through your fabric stash and pull out some pieces large enough to make napkins—ideally a shape you already have and use for your table arrangements. Also, to make sure it's a convenient size for the plates you will use. I used a mix of grey and dark blue, which look beautifully classic and pair well with both modern and rustic table settings.
Wash and press the fabric before you cut. This will remove any sizing and ensure your napkins don’t shrink or warp later.
Step 2: Cutting the Napkins
Place your fabric on a self-healing cutting mat- mine was still delivering so I used a wooden plank. You can be creative with your choices as long as you don't cut your dinner table 😄 Use your wavy rotary cutter OR scissors to cut out squares. The wavy edge not only adds a fun, handmade detail—it also helps prevent fraying if you’re going for a raw edge look.
Step 3: Finishing the Edges
This is my first time using the cutter blade, so I had to trim some of the edges as they weren't exactly perfect. The goal is to make it look as even as possibly can, but I have to remember this is still a hand made project 😄
Here are two easy finishing options, depending on the look you want:
Option 1: Raw Wavy Edge -If your fabric doesn’t fray too much, you can leave the edges raw. The wavy cut gives a subtle decorative finish that looks intentional and laid-back. Just press the napkins flat and you're good to go.
Option 2: Burn baby Burn- Take a lighter or light up a candle and gently go along the edges to secure them. Careful not to burn yourself or the fabric ✌🏻
Step 4: Press and Set
Give your napkins one final press with an iron, and voilà—they’re ready to grace your table! Stack them, fold them into creative shapes, or tie them with twine for a rustic vibe.
Final Thoughts: Crafting these napkins was not only a great way to use up fabric scraps, but it also added a handmade touch to my home. The moody grey and dark blue tones bring a touch of elegance, while the wavy edges keep things playful. Perfect for cozy dinners, holiday settings, or even as part of a handmade gift set!
